A Reflection on Life, Mental Health, and Daily Struggles

Whatโ€™s something most people donโ€™t understand?

Thereโ€™s something Iโ€™ve come to realize over the years, something that many people donโ€™t fully understand. Itโ€™s not just about me; itโ€™s about countless others who navigate life with silent battles, unseen struggles, and a quiet strength that often goes unnoticed.

Most people donโ€™t understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. Itโ€™s easy to see when someone has a broken arm or a fever, but emotional wounds, stress, and burnout? Those are often dismissed, ignored, or misunderstood. Iโ€™ve seen this play out in both my personal and professional life. As someone who works in public service, I witness firsthand how people expect employees like me to function at full capacity, regardless of how mentally or emotionally drained we might feel. Thereโ€™s this unspoken expectation that as long as weโ€™re physically present, we should be able to perform. But mental fatigue is real, and ignoring it only leads to deeper exhaustion.

In my everyday routine, I juggle multiple responsibilities, ensuring quality work at my job, nurturing my passion for music and the arts, caring for our beloved Labradors, and advocating for mental well-being. Some days, I feel unstoppable. Other days, the weight of responsibilities is overwhelming. And yet, many people think that as long as I’m smiling or appearing productive, everything must be fine.

Another thing people don’t always understand the power of small, everyday acts of self-care. They don’t have to be grand. For me, it could be the morning breeze with a little sunshine, a peaceful moment driving in the rain, or a quiet night walk with our Labradors under the stars. These simple moments help me rest and remind me that taking care of my mental health is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

In a world that glorifies productivity and hustle, many fail to realize that rest is also acts of self-care. Taking a break, slowing down, or even admitting that you’re not okay isn’t weakness, it’s self-awareness. And it’s through that self-awareness that we build resilience, grow stronger, and show up better for ourselves and others.

To the younger generation and anyone reading this: be kind to yourself and to others. Not everything is as it seems, and not everyone who looks okay is truly okay. Let’s create a culture where checking is on someone isn’t seen as an obligation but as an act of genuine care. Let’s be more patient, more understanding, and more willing to listen.

Because at the end of the day, what most people don’t understand is often what truly matters most.
