Living Faith in the Quiet Moments

Have you ever done something good but felt the need to announce it, maybe posting a donation on social media or casually mentioning how you helped someone? Itโ€™s natural to want recognition, but in Matthew 6:3-18, Jesus invites us to a different way of living: giving, praying, and fasting in secret, where only God sees.

At first, this might seem counterintuitive. Why keep good deeds private when they can inspire others? But Jesus isnโ€™t saying we should never share our faith. Instead, Heโ€™s reminding us that true faith isnโ€™t about impressing people, itโ€™s about deepening our relationship with God.

Giving: The Quiet Act of Kindness

Think about the last time you helped someone. Did you do it for them, or for the appreciation that followed? Jesus challenges us to give in such a way that even our โ€œleft hand doesnโ€™t know what our right hand is doing.โ€ Imagine doing good so naturally and selflessly that it becomes second nature, no expectations, no need for applause, just love in action.

Maybe that looks like paying for a friendโ€™s meal without telling them, leaving an encouraging note for a coworker, or donating anonymously. The joy isnโ€™t in being seen itโ€™s in knowing that God sees.

Praying: The Power of Private Conversations with God

In a world of oversharing, Jesusโ€™ advice to โ€œgo to your inner room, close the door, and prayโ€ feels radical. Weโ€™re used to public expressionsโ€”tweets, Instagram stories, and group chats. But prayer is different. Itโ€™s a personal conversation, not a performance.

Have you ever prayed silently during a tough momentโ€”on a commute, before an exam, or in the middle of a stressful day? Those are the prayers that matter most. Theyโ€™re raw, unfiltered, and deeply personal. God isnโ€™t impressed by fancy words; Heโ€™s moved by an honest heart.

Fasting: Strength with a Smile

Fasting isnโ€™t just about food, itโ€™s about discipline and self-control. Maybe for you, fasting means putting down your phone for a day, cutting back on negativity, or taking a break from things that distract you from God.

Jesus tells us to โ€œanoint our head and wash our faceโ€ when we fast, meaning we should carry ourselves with joy rather than looking miserable. Itโ€™s a reminder that faith isnโ€™t meant to be a burden but a source of strength.

Living It Out Today

So how can we apply this in everyday life?

  • Give without expecting recognition. Pay for someoneโ€™s coffee, help a friend without telling others, or simply offer your time.
  • Pray from the heart. Whether itโ€™s a whispered thought, a journal entry, or a moment of silence before bed, make it real.
  • Fast from distractions. Maybe take a break from social media, negativity, or unhealthy habits, and do it joyfully.

Faith isnโ€™t about being seen. Itโ€™s about being transformed. The most powerful acts of love, the most sincere prayers, and the most meaningful sacrifices often happen in the quiet. And in that quiet, God moves.

Letโ€™s live out our faith not for likes or recognition, but for the joy of knowing that God sees, God knows, and God rewards in ways beyond our imagination.
