Loving Beyond Limits: A Reflection on Luke 6:35-36

Have you ever felt wronged by someone and thought, Why should I be kind to them? Itโ€™s natural to want to hold back kindness when we feel hurt or unappreciated. But in Luke 6:35โ€“36, Jesus challenges us to go beyond what feels natural, He calls us to love, give, and forgive without expecting anything in return. Thatโ€™s tough, right? In a world where โ€œgive and takeโ€ is the norm, Jesus asks us to simply give. Not because people deserve it, but because love and mercy define who we are as His children.

Love Without Conditions

We often love based on how others treat us. If someone is good to us, weโ€™re good to them. But what about those who are rude, unfair, or ungrateful? Jesus says, love them anyway. Why? Because God loves usโ€”even when we mess up, take things for granted, or fall short. If His love is unconditional, ours should be too.

Give Without Expectations

How often do we help others but secretly hope theyโ€™ll return the favor? Jesus invites us to give freely, not because weโ€™ll get something back, but because itโ€™s the right thing to do. Whether itโ€™s our time, support, or even just a smile, our generosity reflects Godโ€™s kindness.

Show Mercy in Everyday Life

Being merciful doesnโ€™t mean allowing people to take advantage of us. It means choosing kindness over bitterness. Maybe a coworker takes credit for your idea, a friend forgets to say thank you, or a family member lets you down. Instead of holding onto resentment, we can choose mercy. Not because they deserve it, but because we are children of a merciful Father.

A Challenge for Today

Think of someone who has frustrated or hurt you recently. Instead of holding onto negativity, say a prayer for them. Do one small act of kindness without expecting anything in return. It could be a message of encouragement, a favor, or even just a patient response when they least expect it.

Love. Give. Forgive. Not for rewards from people, but because it brings us closer to the heart of God. And in that, we find true peace and joy.
